FOUR SCORES FOR DEANGELO

Posted by Mike Florio on 11/30/08, 4:47 p.m.

The Carolina Panthers shrugged off last week’s trouncing at the Georgia Dome by somehow finagling a 35-31 win over the Packers at Lambeau Field.

The star of the game was running back DeAngelo Williams, who scored four touchdowns on the ground.  In all, Williams rushed for 72 yards on 21 carries.

Williams got some help from receiver Steve Smith.  Shut out in the first two quarters of the game, Smith teed up two of Williams’ touchdown runs with long, athletic pass receptions.  Smith had four catches for 105 yards in the second half.

The final score came only 27 seconds after the Packers had taken a 31-28 lead on a short field goal with 1:57 to play.  A 45-yard kickoff return from Mark Jones followed by a 45-yard catch by Smith led to the one-yard plunge from Williams.

On the next drive, linebacker Jon Beason intercepted Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the Carolina 39 to seal the win.

The Packers outgained the Panthers by 138 yards, 438-300.

Packer D provided quite a lot of comic relief today. Funny stuff!

Like a few other times this year the Packers crapped the bed and gave the game away with bad plays and bad decisions.

Twice they had Carolina beat (after going up 28-21 and then 31-28) and long returns and bad pass defense killed them. I think GB outgained the Panthers like 2-1 in total yardage or something ridiculous like that.

McCarthy also deserves some heat at the end of the game. How in the hell do you not go for it on 4th and 1 (to go up 7) knowing your defense hasn’t stopped them all day? Even if they don’t make it in the Panthers would have to go at least 65 yards to have a shot at a game winning FG. As it was they only needed to go about 55 yards to score a TD.

It’s been that kind of a year for the Packers- 4 losses by 4 points or less. Close doesn’t count though and it’s been a forgettable season for sure.

Prediction: DeAngelo gets NFC Offensive Player of the Month. In four games he ran for over 400 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Book it. Also, Peppers could get NFC Defensive Player of the Month after collecting seven sacks and a couple forced fumbles.

Deangelo Williams is likely the most underrated starting RB in the league. How close is he to 1000 yards? (checking…) 955. Should reach 1,000 on MNF.

Please fire McCarthy, he has cost this team at least 4 wins this season with his idiotic play calling. I agree with Whoa There, I mean how the hell do you not go for it there? especially after they have returned kickoffs good all game. F*ck I am pissed at McCarthy and the whole damn team.

pretty sure that was the packs 4th loss by 5 or fewer points…in all four of those losses you can point out one or two plays(per) that killed us. winning the time of possesion and total yardage catagories will win you ball games, untill you give up huge plays. poor coaching on the defensive side of the ball. coaches need to make sure players know to FALL ON THE DAMNED BALL! coaches need to make sure players KNOW HOW TO TACKLE! little mistakes can cause you huge problems… looks like the pack will be picking high in the first round next year….

Shouldn’t have benched Ryan Grant. That team is a running team.

Mcarthy is not a good head coach. Really suprising since he is a product of the “Jim Hastlett Coaching Tree” LOL!!

Aside from coaching Packer D is awful. AJ Hawk is out of position constantly and can’t cover a tight end. He is serviceable at best and considering how high he went in the first round for all intents and purposes he is a BUST !!

Most of D’s TD’s were set up by the Packers suddenly nonexistant secondary. Still, can’t take away the 4 TD’s running. Good job. Huge game on MNF next week.

The most pressing question is this. . .

How are the whining, crying Packer fans of PFT Planet going to tie this to Jared Allen and/or Adrian Peterson taking his helmet off?

Travell Wharton was the player of the game though. His blocks sprung Williams twice and Jake on his run. Plus he picked up a fumble.
Don’t know where that overpaid cornerback was though.

anybody else see the packers fans bat down d-will’s winning TD ball when he tried to toss it to the few carolina fans in the corner of the stadium?

maybe the panthers fans just had bad hands, but it looked to me like the GB fans were playing better D than their team was at that point….

Nah.. I liken it to baseball where you throw the home run ball from the opposing team back on the field. That and it was the best defensive play the Packers had all day.

is anyone really suprised? heartbreaking-loss+full games’ worth of beer+stupid other teams’ fans in front of you= an opportunity to do something that makes you feel good. i would have done it too, as well as any other fan in that situation. it was awesome, bottom line.
