Despite a report that Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers would have to fork over $11,000 to change his jersey from 58 to 55, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reports that Rivers now has the number.
It’s unclear whether Rivers finagled the number without having to pay the money.
The 55 jersey became available once Ahman Brooks was cut, but Reebok didn’t want to have to eat its inventory of unsold 58 jerseys. (And yet no one cares about the poor saps who paid good money for the jersey that became obsolete before the first regular-season game of Rivers’ career.)
It’ll be interesting to see whether the same decision is made as to Lions running back Kevin Smith, who was told by the team that he won’t be permitted to change from 34 to 24.

This issue was quickly cleared up when Reebok realized that it wasn’t a matter of ‘unsold 58 jerseys’ but rather ‘58 unsold jerseys.’
This is Keith Rivers, after all. I’m sure they weren’t selling like Farve’s jerseys…

I didn’t hear a fuss when Pittsburgh let LaMarr Woodley change from 55 to 56 prior to the regular season last year. In fact, I saw several 55 Woodley jerseys last year. Oops.

If Kevin Smith wants the number, he should just wait until next off season when Kalvin Pearson [currently has #24] gets arrested [again] and subsequently cut [again].
